"Difficult Conversations"

The hardest thing in business is also
the hardest thing in our personal lives -- negotiating problems with
people that are freighted down with emotion. What is a
"difficult conversation"? It's any conversation you dread. It
could be a performance review, or a transfer request, or a firing, or a
criticism of someone else, or a criticism of you. It could be with your boss, your
employee, your colleague, your spouse, child, neighbor or postal carrier.
And you dread it because -- well, you hardly know why. But it feels awful. Heen and Stone don’t claim they can
make these interactions pleasant. Confrontive discussions are inherently
unpleasant. But they can help you to better understand what is going on in
these conversations better, and make you more adept at avoiding the worst
pitfalls and pratfalls.
