The Genesis Code, by John Case
This is the summer vacation take-along book everyone is talking about, featuring our own Michael Finley in a reprise of his real-life role as cigar-chomping, ambulance-chasing gossip columnist and pit bull.

"In E-Commerce Security: Weak Links, Best Defenses by Anup K.
Ghosh (John Wiley, $24.99) Ghosh tells of the infamous German
cracker group, Chaos Computer Club, who demonstrated on TV
how an ActiveX control (a Microsoft version of Java) on their web
site can be used to move money from the reader's bank account
(via Quicken) to an account set up by the website. People lured by
your website's title, "Becoming a millionaire in 5 minutes," don't
realize till their bank statement arrives in the mail that the
millionaire was them, not you."

This is a dark world, in which innocent-seeming propositions are
serpentine tricks, or preludes to litigation. A Korean visitor to an
Italian pharmaceuticals company accidentally dropped a
handkerchief into a fermentation vat. Back in Korea, the cloth was
wrung out, and a valuable tuberculosis drug was extracted and
reengineered.

Last month a group called The Luddite Congress held its second annual meeting, in bustling downtown Barnsville, Ohio. In
attendance was Kirkpatrick Sale, author of an excellent history of the Luddite uprising in England in 1811. Sale has carved a niche for
himself as an anti-progress academic. He is given to saying things such as, "I find talking on the phone a physical pain, as well as a
mental anguish." Sale and fellow neo-Luddites Wendell Berry have no illusions technology will go away any time soon, but they are
convinced ours would be a better world without nasty things like computers, printing presses, and booster shots.
Sale's book, Rebels Against the Future (Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, $13) was a minor hit last year in hardcover and has just
been reissued in paperback. It tells the story of the weavers of the early Industrial Revolution who glimpsed the future of weaving
machines and jacquard looms and went berserk, trashing the looms and shaking England to her foundation garments. Fourteen
Luddites were hanged in Nottingham, but their truth goes marching on.

"Written more for the student than for the parent, the book covers the essential ground, explaining how to map out a college plan,
what to look for in a college, plus issues we never used to think about, such as on-campus safety and whether any of that school's
graduates have gone on to actual employment. A favorite section for me was "The Top 10 Wrong Reasons to Choose a College"
(#9 "They have ivy on the walls -- or something").

"The Internet itself bears no responsibility for behavior online. This is because by its very nature it encourages antisocial activities.
How? Why? Because it is so easy for someone with a little knowledge to be anonymous to most Internet users. Anonymity all too
often brings out the worst in people."

"O'Keefe draws a fine line between spam, the indiscriminate proliferation of unsolicited e-mail, and proper promotion, which he
defines as targeted and discerning -- selling only to people who are likely to be interested. He breaks Internet promotion down into
manageable tasks. The key in each case is making contact with people without unduly antagonizing them:
Getting other sites to link with yours; the trick is offering something valuable and free.
The right and wrong ways to conduct an online press conference;
How to get in a self-serving word on Usenet without arousing angry cybervillagers;
How to use listservers (automatic mailing lists); show r-e-s-p-e-c-t.
The pros and cons of buying paid advertising; will that purchased banner really attract traffic?
How to create and use a mailing list that doesn't get you barbecued."

"People wonder why keyboard stress syndromes didn't seem to happen back during the days of manual typewriters. It wasn't that our
parents' generation was more stoic, it as that electricity encouraged us to use our backs and shoulders less. We let all the action happen at
our fingertips, and that is bad. The design of the mouse especially encourages you to focus action on your hand and wrist, putting more
stress on delicate, already overworked muscles."

"Our society is headed down the sewer faster than chicken guts down the Arkansas River.
